Ethiopian takes delivery of its last Boeing 777-200LR freighter

Ethiopian Airlines Takes Delivery of Final Boeing 777-200LR Freighter, Bolstering Global Cargo Network
Ethiopian Airlines has taken delivery of its 12th—and final—Boeing 777-200LR production freighter, marking a significant milestone in both the airline’s fleet expansion and the history of the aircraft type. The new aircraft, registered ET-BAC, departed Boeing’s Everett facility at Seattle Paine Field International Airport (PAE) on May 23 and arrived at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) the following day, according to Flightradar24 data. Since its arrival, ET-BAC has already operated flights to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Bamako, Mali, and is scheduled to serve Lagos, Nigeria, on May 27.
In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Ethiopian Cargo highlighted the significance of the delivery: “This milestone not only expands our cargo capacity but also enhances our logistics network across key global markets, reinforcing our leadership in air freight. What makes this event more historic is that the Boeing 777-200LRF is the final production of this aircraft type to be manufactured by Boeing, one of the most capable and efficient freighters in aviation history. Ethiopian Airlines is honored to be the recipient of this iconic aircraft, a testament to our strong partnership with Boeing and our continued investment in cutting-edge fleet technology.”
The addition of ET-BAC further strengthens Ethiopian Airlines’ position in the global air cargo market, potentially prompting competitors to consider expanding their own cargo capacities in response. Industry observers note that the airline’s growing fleet and enhanced logistics capabilities are likely to draw attention from the market, underscoring Ethiopian’s role as a leading player in air freight logistics.
Earlier this year, Ethiopian took delivery of its 11th 777F, registered ET-BAB. According to Planespotters data, the airline’s cargo fleet now comprises 12 Boeing 777-200LRFs, four converted 737-800 freighters, three converted 767-300 freighters, and two new-build 767-300Fs delivered in December. This diverse and modern fleet enables Ethiopian Cargo to serve a wide range of cargo needs efficiently.
Ethiopian Airlines operates to 70 dedicated cargo destinations and over 140 passenger destinations across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Its cargo division offers specialized services for general freight as well as horticulture, pharmaceuticals, valuables, live animals, and e-commerce shipments.
With the arrival of the last Boeing 777-200LR freighter, Ethiopian Airlines not only cements its leadership in African and global air cargo but also signals its commitment to investing in advanced fleet technology and expanding its logistics network to meet growing demand worldwide.
