IndiGo to Build New MRO at Bengaluru Airport Ahead of A350 Entry

IndiGo to Build New MRO Facility at Bengaluru Airport Ahead of A350 Launch
BENGALURU—IndiGo has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to establish a major Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR). The agreement grants IndiGo 31 acres of land, supporting the airline’s rapidly expanding fleet and infrastructure needs as it prepares for the introduction of wide-body Airbus A350 aircraft.
The new MRO facility will be equipped to service both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, marking a significant step in strengthening long-term aviation infrastructure in South India. This expansion is part of IndiGo’s broader strategy to localize key operations, enhance efficiency, and support its fast-growing domestic and international network.
To lead its wide-body MRO initiatives, IndiGo has appointed Ton Dortmans, a veteran with extensive experience at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Dortmans will report to Chief Operating Officer Isidro Porqueras and work closely with Senior Vice President of Engineering Parichay Dutta. His leadership is expected to be instrumental as IndiGo prepares for the entry of the Rolls-Royce-powered Airbus A350s, scheduled to join the fleet from 2027. The move signals IndiGo’s entry into the wide-body segment and underscores its commitment to developing robust in-house MRO capabilities within India.
IndiGo currently operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft, with more than 900 on order. The airline opened its second Bengaluru hangar in 2023 and has recently established a European base in Amsterdam to support its international expansion. Direct flights to Amsterdam and Manchester are set to begin in July 2025, further strengthening IndiGo’s global presence.
CEO Pieter Elbers highlighted Dortmans’ deep expertise in MRO and wide-body operations, emphasizing the opportunity to build advanced maintenance capabilities in India using local talent and IndiGo’s operational scale. The airline’s strategic plan, “Towards New Heights and Across New Frontiers,” aims to position IndiGo as a leader in both domestic and international markets.
Market reactions to the announcement have been positive, with investor confidence buoyed by IndiGo’s proactive approach to infrastructure and fleet growth. However, the airline faces potential challenges in managing costs and logistics for the new MRO hub. Industry observers note that competitors may respond by expanding their own MRO facilities, intensifying competition in the sector.
In a related leadership update, IndiGo has appointed Vikram Singh Mehta as the new chairman of the board, succeeding Venkataramani Sumantran, who oversaw the airline’s strong post-pandemic recovery.
As IndiGo accelerates its expansion and prepares for the arrival of wide-body aircraft, the new Bengaluru MRO facility is set to play a pivotal role in supporting the airline’s operational ambitions and maintaining its competitive edge in the evolving aviation landscape.
